A: Metrix 1.5 introduced the ability for a
user to add a low res jpeg, gif, or png file to a product page for
display in the layout view. One of the key purposes of this functionality
is to assist the manual positioning of nested non-rectangular products.
When manually nesting it helps for a user to be able to see the
shape of each product, so the background of the graphic file needs
to be rendered transparently. The user can nominate a color to be
rendered transparent when they select the graphic file.
This sounds simple enough but there's a small hitch.
Due to file compression limitations all background pixels will probably
not be exactly the same. To get around this Metrix actually makes
a range of colors similar to the selected color transparent, and
the Transparency Tolerance setting determines the size of the range.
The Transparency Tolerance setting specifies the range
of the red, green, and blue (RGB) values, either side of the selected
color's values, to be rendered transparent. For instance, let's
assume a presentation folder graphic has a white background so the
user has nominated white to be transparent. Pure white has the following
pixel values - R 255, G 255, B 255, but for this example the user
may select a transparent color of R 235, G 235, B 235. With a tolerance
of +/- 20 all pixels within the following range will be rendered
transparent: R 215 to 255, G 215 to 255, B 215 to 255.
